Chennai Metro Phase 2: 116 km Expansion Update and Timeline

CMRL Phase 2 is progressing with construction underway. The 116 km expansion will triple Chennai Metro's current network size.

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has provided an update on Phase 2 — the massive 116 km expansion that will add over 120 new stations to the network.

Phase 2 corridors:

Corridor 3: Madhavaram to SIPCOT (45.8 km)
Corridor 4: Lighthouse to Poonamallee (26.1 km)
Corridor 5: Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (45.8 km)

Current status: Civil construction is underway on multiple sections. Stations are being designed with 'Green Building' specifications with rooftop solar panels, rainwater harvesting, and energy-efficient HVAC systems.

Expected completion: Phase 2 is expected to open in sections between 2027 and 2030. When complete, Chennai Metro will be one of the top-5 largest metro networks in India.
